Avalanche Kills Heli-skier in British Columbia

Three people were Heli-skiing on Mount Currie area North of Pemberton on Thursday when the avalanche occurred. The three were crossing an exposed area of the mountain one at a time. The avalanche swept one skier over a cliff. He was located by his companions, but was badly injured.

The initial helicopter rescue attempt failed due to darkness, but a second team with more specialized equipment was able to get the injured person out that evening. The man, believed to be from the Pemberton area, later died from his injuries.

Pemberton is about 93 miles North of Vancouver. Pemberton has recorded 22 snow days this December. On Wedsnesday, the Canadian Avalanche Center rated the Whistler Backcountry and South Coast Inland regions as a level 4 (High) danger area.
