A 7-year old boy fell 60 feet from the Mount Lincoln Chair at Sugar Bowl on Sunday. He was flown to the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno where he was listed in critical condition. The boy, who’s name was not released, was riding with two other 7 year olds at the time of the fall. The boy was wearing a helmet, but he fell on hard-packed snow and dirt. It is unclear if the safety bar was up or down, but a preliminary investigation revealed no mechanical problems with the chair or lift.
The boy was a member of the Sugar Bowl Ski Team, a non-profit corporation “dedicated to the academic and athletic education of young people.” There was no mention of the accident on the Sugar Bowl or Ski Team’s websites.
The last death at Sugar Bowl was March 22, 2011 when the body of 58 year old man was recovered from an overnight search. He was reported missing the day before. There had been a recent storm lasting 3 days that had dumped 8 feet of new snow. A medical condition may have contributed to his death.
Sugar Bowl is also mourning the loss of Warren Hellman.
