If your ski resort is lacking snow, you might try a different sport. Skating is cheap and easy to learn. If you skated years ago, you can pick it up again quickly. There are several rinks around the Tahoe Truckee area that offer public skating and skate rentals. Many of the rinks are located at your favorite ski resorts.

Truckee Ice Rink: Public Skating under the pines, overhead lights and music, 7 days a week. Located in the Truckee River Regional Park on Old Brockway Road.
