The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team is cancelling this year’s Great Ski Race due to lack of snow. This is the second time in 36 years that the race has been cancelled. “It’s not just that there isn’t enough snow…..it’s that there isn’t any snow on long portions of the race course”.
The Great Ski Race is a cross country ski event that starts in Tahoe City and ends in Truckee, a distance of 30 kilometers. The race started with 60 racers in 1977 and grew to a record number of 1109 registered in 2005. Last year’s event had 790 registered entrants.
This is the main fund raising event for the Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team. Proceeds are used to purchase equipment for the Team, and to support winter survival and avalanche education programs sponsored and conducted by the Team.
No word has been posted regarding refunds for registered entrants.
