Tour stop number one of four for the Rahlves’Banzai Tour is at Kirkwood this weekend. The first Banzai race started in 2009 with a single event at Sugar Bowl. The organizer, Daron Rahlves, is a former US World Cup and Olympic ski racer. In 2011, the race grew to a 3 event race series held at Alpine Meadows, Kirkwood Mountain Resort, and Sugar Bowl Resort. This year, Squaw Valley USA was added to the event list.
The format is quite simple. Start at the top, 4 people at a time, go around a few gates, and the first one down wins. Rahlves describes the races as rowdy, wow, wild, hold on, and good luck. Skiers and boarders compete for a total prize purse of $80,000 dollars this year.
The event at Kirkwood is called the Eagle Bowl Banzai because it starts off The Wall and twists into the Eagle Bowl. Best spectator viewing is at the finish and along the ridge of the Eagle Bowl. After the event, High Fives.org will host a party at Bub’s Pub.
Daron Rahlves will appear at each of the events to ski, and assist competitors. Rahlves will compete in the “Super Final” against the Men Ski winners from each race venue.
