April 7, 2012 is the new date for the Tahoe Rim Tour ski and snowshoe race. This is a 26k point to point race beginning in Tahoe City and ending at NorthStar California’s XC center.
The groomed course will begin at North Tahoe High and out on to the Tahoe XC Nordic Center. Athletes will then begin the long climb on the Fiberboard Freeway over 7,700 foot Starratt Pass. Once over the top, the course goes along the Tahoe Rim Trail and connects with the NorthStar XC trail system.
Organizers caution that this race takes place in a “wilderness setting”, subject to challenging elevation gains and exposure to possible extreme weather conditions. There is only one aid station so athletes are advised to carry food and water.
The 3 divisions recognized at this event are classic skiing, skate skiing and snowshoe. The snowshoe course is only 21k in length. Gear bags will be trucked to the finish, and athletes will be trucked back to the start.
This event is put on by Far West Nordic Ski Education Association as a fund raiser for their Junior Ski Program. Winning times last year for skiing were in the 1:19 hour range and 1:42 hour range for snowshoe.
