North Lake Tahoe avalanche critically injures skier

Three backcountry skiers were skiing in the area of Stanford Rock near the backside of Alpine Meadows Resort when they were hit by an avalanche. The avalanche occurred sometime after 2:00pm today. Two of the skiers were unhurt, but the third skier was severely injured.

The skiers were swept into the trees by the avalanche. The one skier sustained multiple broken bones and is in critical condition after coming in contact with the trees.

The Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue team was able to get to the injured skier and extract him sometime after 4:00pm. The rescue team administered CPR as they brought him down the mountain for transport.

The young male skier, unknown name, was transported at about 6:00pm to Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee.

Several feet of new snow has piled up in the recent storm. There has been an avalanche advisory in effect for backcountry skiers.
