I reported on the Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition’s bid for the 2022 Olympics in January of 2012. This private coalition had to submit a proposal this year, for consideration to host the 2022 Winter Games.
The latest news out of Sacramento is that California is teaming up with Nevada officials to lure the Winter Games back to Lake Tahoe. The forming of a joint exploratory committee is the start of the process. Prior to this, both states had independent committees designed to showcase the Tahoe region and bring back the Winter Games.
The new committee is called Lake Tahoe Winter Games Exploratory Committee (LTWGEC). Other Winter Game committees such as Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition, California Winter Games Committee, and the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee will now be providing their resources to LTWGEC. Andy Wirth, CEO of Squaw Valley will be the interim chair of the LTWGEC.
Three other U.S. cities bidding for the games are Salt Lake City, Denver, and Bozeman. No decision will be made by the International Olympic Committee until 2015.
Squaw Valley hosted the Winter Games back in 1960.
