The High Desert Racing Association (HDRA) presents the Fireworks 500 off-road race on Saturday, July 7, 2012. Many of the racers actually arrive in Reno the weekend of June 30, to pre-run the course. There will be an Off-Road Expo in Sparks, NV on that day as well. The Expo is free and open to everyone.
Thursday, July 5 is race qualifying day on the race course. Racers will be staging at the Tahoe-Reno Motorsports off Interstate 80, Exit 32.
Friday, July 6 is “Contingency and Tech Day”. This will take place in Downtown Reno under the “Biggest Little City” arch. This is a huge spectator day because all of the cars and teams will be present. Monster Energy will have freestyle motorcycle riders from the X-Games performing and the Ninja Stunt Team will perform as well.
Saturday, July 7 is race day for the 500 mile Fireworks 500. This is the longest off-road race in the U.S. The course maps and GPS information for the course has not been posted. However, it appears that the course will be in the shape of a 4-leaf clover with a central pit-stop. Each loop, or leaf of the clover, will be 125 miles in length. The course will be spectator friendly because of this loop configuration.
If you come for the race or Expo, be sure to stop by the National Automobile Museum (The Harrah Collection) to view the Off-Road Hall of Fame exhibit.
