Mountain bike season has begun at Lake Tahoe

Stampede R.
The ski racks are gone and the roof-top bikes have returned to the area.  Mountain bikes seem to be everywhere on cars passing through Truckee.  The snow has melted below 7,000 feet.  It’s time to get out and ride.
All the lower trails are open with perfect trail conditions.  Trails like Coldstream Canyon, Emigrant Memorial, Sawtooth Ridge, Lloyd’s, and Waddle Ranch are snow free.

Six of us rode the Sawtooth Ridge Trail yesterday and were surprised to see dusty areas developing already.  There was only one creek crossing. The rest of the creeks were dry.
The higher elevation trails will have some snow, depending on the altitude and slope facing.  The Western States Trail from Squaw Valley up to the Tahoe Rim Trail is open all the way to “the wall”, the 7,000 foot level.  Interestingly, I rode this section of trail on January 7, 2012 and it was snow free to the wall at that time too.
The seasonal bike shop and bike rental companies are back open for the season.  Truckee’s Cyclepaths and The Back Country are open for fixing, selling and renting bikes.
NorthStar at Tahoe will open for downhill mountain biking on June 15th.
