Summer Biathlon National Championships coming to Donner Summit

The Auburn Ski Club will host the 2012 Summer Biathlon National Championships on August, 23-26.

Racing gets underway on August 24, with 5K and 6K “mass start” races. The following day will be 3K and 4K races with interval starting times. On the final day, August 26, there will be 5K/6K “pursuit” races. In the pursuit race, start times will be arranged by an athlete’s results in the 3K/4K from the day before.
The Auburn Ski Club will also be hosting a Novice biathlon on August 25. This event is open to everyone. Kids 8-12 race 1K at 11:40am and participants 13 and older start the 3K race at 12:10pm. The cost for adults is $50 dollars for non-members of the Auburn Ski Club.

Biathlon combines two sports in one event.  The winter biathlon combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting.  This format was included in the Olympics for the first time in 1960. The Championships at Donner Summit will combine shooting with running.
