Two U.S. Senators urge Sierra Club not to sue over Tahoe

U.S Senators Harry Reid of Nevada and Dianne Feinstein of California urged the Sierra Club to drop their lawsuit with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). The Sierra Club and Friends of the West Shore filed a lawsuit in federal district court this month for the recent update to environmental protection standards at Lake Tahoe. The lawsuit alleges that the update erodes environmental protections.

TRPA is a bi-state governing body that controls growth and sets environmental standards for Lake Tahoe. Senators Reid and Feinstein think the lawsuit will jeopardize the implementation of the updated plan, causing loss of federal funding and the potential for Nevada to pull out of the bi-state planning agency all together.

Conservation minded people in Nevada and California are also concerned about the possible passage of Nevada Senate Bill 271, which would allow Nevada to withdraw from TRPA.
