ATV rider seriously injured on Donner Summit

A 47-year-old woman from Fair Oaks was seriously injured last Sunday when the ATV she was riding slipped off the trail and rolled down an embankment. The woman tumbled 50 to 100 feet downhill and came to rest near active railroad tracks.

The railroad tracks were shut down for the rescuers safety while the rescue was in progress. The woman was airlifted from the embankment by the CHP Helicopter H-20, stationed at the Auburn Airport.

Was the victim wearing a helmet?  Not really. According to the CHP she was wearing a bicycle helmet. The bicycle helmet broke into several pieces.

The woman was flown to Auburn where another helicopter flew her to a trauma center in Reno.
