The popular Bijou Dog Park on Al Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe is closed due to concerns about an outbreak of parvovirus. Eleven cases of the potentially deadly canine virus have been reported to the South Lake Tahoe Humane Society in the last two weeks.
The dog park could be where the disease is being spread, so it will be closed for 7 to 10 days for cleaning. Parvovirus is transmitted through contaminated objects such as toys and bedding, as well as feces. The disease is not spread to cats or people.
Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious viral illness that affects dogs. Early symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss and lack of appetite. Cases are typically seen in puppies that are between six weeks and six months old. Early vaccination in young puppies is advised.
An infected dog should not be socialized with other dogs.
