Target Shooting

It isn’t always safe to shoot in the National Forest off some dead-end fire road. A better alternative is an established shooting range.
The Boca Reservoir shooting area is available to the public through a partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Truckee Sportsman’s Association. This is a free area with 4 well defined shooting areas.  There may be a bench or two and possibly some iron targets. It is best to bring your own shooting bench if you need one, as well as targets.

The rules say not to shoot at bottles, cans, and things that will leave a mess. However, this range is somtimes littered with the torn up carcasses of electronics, teddy bears, and furniture.

The upper shooting area is about 1/2 mile behind a locked gate. This range has 3 steel sighting tables and two steel targets.  This upper shooting area is most appropriate for rifles.

Feel free to park before the locked gate and walk in about 100 yards to shoot. If you want to drive in, you can borrow a key from the Truckee Ranger Station. You can also become a member of the Truckee Sportsman Association and get your own gate key.

The Hobart Mills shooting area is open to the public for free. No keys are required. The shooting area is at the side of the road. There are no services here. The place is littered with broken bottles, plastic pieces and a stuffed animal or two. This shooting area is similar to the area at Boca Reservoir.
The Sierra Valley Shooting Range is a shooting range available to the public through a partnership with the U.S. forest Service and the Sierra Valley Sportsman’s Club. This is a free area with target backstops, shooting benches, gun racks, and some tables. This range requires a key which can be borrowed from the Sierraville Ranger Station, Truckee Ranger Station, the Sierraville Superstop & Grocery, or the Sierraville Service & Country Store.
The Boca Reservoir shooting area is near the dam. Take the Hirschdale Road off ramp from Hwy. 80 and follow the signs to Boca Reservoir. The shooting area is the first right past Boca Dam Reservoir Road. You will see a locked gate which you can walk around or unlock if you borrowed the key.

The Hobart Mills shooting area is 5 miles North of Truckee on Hwy.89. Turn right on Hobart Mills Road. Turn left at the “T” intersection and continue for one quarter mile where you turn right to stay on Hobart Mills Road. The shooting area is on your left about 100 yards up the road.

Sierraville is 24 miles North of Truckee on Hwy. 89. I haven’t been to this range yet, so you will have to get directions when you borrow the key.
